Accepting Your Hair Type w/ Apryl

Hello loves. I'm baaaack. It's Apryl, and I'm here with a post on accepting your hair! Any questions or comments, tweet me (@pennyroyalpry)!

I have seen many girls our age who are scared of going natural because they think that natural hair may be too hard to manage, or maybe they just think they won't like their hair.
Like I mentioned in my previous post, I wasn't sure what my actual hair texture/type would be before I started transtioning into natural hair, but I was personally fascinated to find out.
Maybe you're one of those girls who are thinking of transitioning, and need a little extra tips & advice. Maybe you have already gone natural, but don't really think you like your hair. If so, or if you just want to know how to accept your kinks, curls, and coils, this is the blog for you! Stay tuned.

Most African-American girls have grown up thinking that they have "nappy hair".
In the natural hair terminology, it's called type 4c or 4z hair. It's basically hair without a curl pattern, a 'fro. (I have some sections in my hair like this, and I love it!) I have many many hair types/textures, from about 4a-4z.
If you're a teen and have natural hair, either you have never gotten a relaxer or you made the decision to go natural. I heard my mother say once that getting perms & relaxers were once the "style", and were the easy way out of dealing with coarse, black girl hair.
There are many girls I know who have never gotten a relaxer, and are absolutely tired of their hair in its natural state.
I really want girls to love the hair that grows out of their scalp and accept it. That's the first step. Just acknowledge your hair and be okay with it. After that, you're free to do whatever, just as long as you accept your hair.
Here are some tips.

1. Make your hairstyles versatile.
Find new styles to do with your hair. If it's natural, try twist-outs, braid-outs, bantu knot-outs, wear it up, wear it down. Sometimes, you can even wear it straight (use heat protectant!), wear it wavy, pin it up, wear it wild, the options are endless. Natural hair has that versatility to do many styles, especially type 4 hair (stay tuned for the next post w/ Nile!) But, if you have type 3, 2, or even 1 hair, there are still many styles you can do. Just be sure to protect your hair, and love it! Go on Youtube or Google and search up new hairstyles, and just Diana Ross your hair out (insider, if you get it, you're awesome!)

2. Don't ask for opinions. Do what you want to do with it.
Don't rely on what others think looks good on you or fits your face. If you like it, put it on. Basically, if you want your hair a certain way, keep trying to achieve that look. Don't focus on what others have to say about it. Just do you.

3. Be confident.
Going natural is very hard in terms of self-esteem and confidence. Many people may have a mouthful to say about you, but you just have to focus on yourself and be yourself. Our hair doesn't define us, but it does make us who we are. However your hair is, love it, and I'm sure others around will even learn to love it too.

I hope this helped. Feel free to leave any comments or further tips! Thanks for reading, loves.

Apryl ♥
