CLAWS: A REVIEW (IN COLLABORATION WITH TRAVIS FENTY)
Hey guys, it's Indya Jazmine and I'm a contributor to the Nerdy Naturals blog. Lately, I've been watching the new show Claws, and I decided to do a review on it in collaboration with Travis Fenty of the Mind of Travis blog.

The costumes of the series are just as amazing and interesting at the plot. My personal
favorite costumes have been worn by Virginia and Desna but each character’s costumes are on
point and speaks volumes of their personalities. Virginia’s costumes are always sexy and
modern, with a little street and classic 1990s added into it. Desna’s costumes are stylish, snug,
sexy and conveys her role as the leader. Polly’s costume are very vintage and seems to allude
to the 1950s, also a little reserved but with a dash of color (much like her character). Jennifer’s
costumes scream sexiness and hints to a somewhat modern Marilyn Monroe with cleavage and
curves made constant in her outfits. And Quiet Ann, like her name, is very reserved with little to
no color besides black and gray.
Needless to say, the acting on the show is phenomenal! Specifically Karrueche Tran has
definitely improved her acting skills over the years and it’s very clear on each episode far.
Another stand out is Judy Reyes, who usually plays feminine, non-masculine roles. A straight
woman playing a lesbian has to be a difficult challenge for anyone but Reyes is making it work
for her and playing it convincingly. All in all, the acting by everyone in the cast (who are all for
the most part seasoned) is great and very convincing, especially Perrineau’s mental disability
performance.

The natural and sudden attraction is hard to deny as soon as Desna (Niecy Nash), Ann
(Judy Reyes), and Jennifer (Jenn Lyon) share their excitement for the upcoming NYE party and
practice their own sexy, individual entrances. The attraction is furthered once Polly (Carrie
Preston) shows her quirkiness and Virginia the new girl (Karrueche Tran) shows her sass and
know-it-all attitude.
Along with the natural fierceness of the show is its equally fierce soundtrack to set the
scenes perfectly. Songs like "Bo$$" by Fifth Harmony that glorify women empowerment and "La
Tirana" by La Lupe that heightens the spice and fire of the ladies of the Nails Artisan makes the
show even more fantastic. Everyone knows that the soundtrack is just as important as the film
and/or show and Claws absolutely nails it, no pun intended. The mix of old school and new age
music is the perfect blend and sets the tone for each scene perfectly; the selection of songs are
obviously handled with extra attention and care. Whoever is in charge of the arrangement of
music deserves an A+ with extra credit. The soundtrack alone would sell well and top the charts.
Its diversity and quality is excellent.
As the show moves along, the plot thickens and thickens, becoming more intricate with
each episode (currently in its third episode). Immediately after the first episode, I was completely
hooked and thirsty for more. The plot is very refreshing and revolutionary based on the fact that
women in gangster and head-of-an-empire roles are rarely seen; it’s good to see women finally
being in control of their money and their destinies and their business. Furthermore, the touching
moments of the plot make it even better. Desna seems to play Mama Lion to her cubs, which
are the ladies of Nails Artisan and her mentally challenged brother Dean (Harold Perrineau), as
she is always looking out for the well-being of her loved ones and on instant attack mode if
anyone dares to step in their way.

With every aspect considered, Claws is for certain a promising show, destined for
greatness. Countless Emmy and Oscar nominations does not seem impossible for the show in
the future, and each season will certainly get better over the years, much like a fine wine.
