BLACK GIRL HAIR.

Nerdy Naturals is a team full of writers, but we're also YouTubers, singers, makeup gurus--and photographers.

This week, we wanted to feature Michaela's work. Michaela is a photographer who attends the Fashion Institute of Technology, and titles her work Titled Life Visuals

After seeing Michaela post her work on Twitter and get hundreds of retweets, we were HOOKED. Nerdy Naturals loves to put a spotlight on young women doing their own ventures--and we thought Michaela would be perfect to be featured this month.

We knew that we wanted to review her work, but we thought it'd be best if another photographer did it, so we asked another Nerdy Naturals's contributor, Raye, to review Michaela's work.

Scroll down to see Michaela's work and read Raye's thoughts on her work!

Raye's Review:

Each photo collage features various types of Black hairstyles, products, and styling processes. The first thing I noticed about these pictures is just the clean consistency of each shot. From the simple backgrounds to the elegant geometry of the collage, they’re all beautifully composed and have a wonderful slight grainy appearance to them, which lends itself to the familiar topic at hand.

I love the fact that all of these highlight different types of Black hair. There are issues with discriminatory hair typing, colorism, and wearing extensions in the Black community and I’m happy that this series sheds a uniformly beautiful light on a diverse set of styles.

My favorite photo in the series is this collage of products and tools. The hair isn’t shown, the product isn’t being used directly in the photo, but the experiences are so universal that I--and many other Black people--can name what the product is and how to use it. These photos celebrate our shared realities and in this incredibly divisive time, that’s exactly what we need.
